Men’s Lax Dominates Medaille for 6th Straight Win
Offense, defense, faceoffs, penalty killing, the Keuka College men's lacrosse team thoroughly dominated during Wednesday night's 19-4 win over Medaille College at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex.
Senior Mike Crumlish (Hilton, NY/Hilton) set a career-high in goals (five) and points (seven) while junior Connor Latimer (Whitby, Ontario/Genesee Community College) added four goals and two assists — his sixth straight game with five or more points, as the Storm (6-1, 4-0 NEAC) won their sixth straight contest.
Latimer leads all of Division III in points per game (6.57) with his 46 points through seven games.
Sophomore Derek Pfeiffer (Lee Center, NY/Rome Free Academy) added three goals and two assists while classmate Anthony Luppino (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) added two goals and three assists for the Storm, who blanked Medaille (4-5, 2-2) for the first 29 minutes and 45 seconds until Jake Engleman scored with 15 seconds left in the opening half.
Keuka took a 5-0 lead after one quarter as Luppino scored twice, Pfeiffer recorded a man-up goal and Latimer and senior Anthony Jones (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) each scored during the opening stanza.
Crumlish and sophomore Cory Gray (Seneca Castle, NY/Midlakes) extended the lead to 7-0 with goals 19 seconds apart early in the second, and Crumlish scored twice and Latimer added a goal to give the Storm a 10-0 lead with 5:38 remaining in the opening half.
Once again, a stout Storm defense, led by juniors Scott Miller (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan), Brandon DeCaire (LaFayette, NY/LaFayette), Justin Strain (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) held the Mavericks in check.
Brock Levin, who entered the game leading the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) in goals scored (38) and points (44), was held scoreless until his even-strength tally with 2:24 remaining finished off the scoring.
Sophomore Eric Saltrelli (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) made 14 saves while Miller caused three turnovers and Strain caused two turnovers for the Storm.
Junior Zachary Koczent (Geneva, NY/Geneva) won 18 of 24 faceoffs (75 percent), recording season-bests for faceoffs won and faceoff percentage.
Keuka finished a perfect 16-for-16 in clear attempts and won 21 of 28 faceoffs. Crumlish and Latimer each scored man-up goals 21 seconds apart late in the third, and sophomore James Voigt (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) added a man-up tally 3:27 into the fourth as the Green and Gold went 4-for-7 with the man-advantage.
Latimer has scored four or more goals in four of the last five games, and currently leads the Storm in goals (22), assists (24) and points (46), and he ranks first in the NEAC in points, second in assists and is third in goals scored.
