Win Streak Grows to 8 for Men’s Lax
Sophomore James Voigt (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) equaled his career high with seven points as the Keuka College men's lacrosse team picked up its eighth straight win with a 21-6 victory over SUNYIT Wednesday afternoon in Marcy, N.Y.
Voigt scored four goals with three assists, junior Connor Latimer (Whitby, Ont./Genesee Community College) added three goals and four assists and senior Mike Crumlish (Hilton, NY/Hilton) had four goals and two assists to power the Storm (8-1, 5-0 NEAC).
Voigt equaled the seven points he had during a 16-6 win over Cazenovia in the NEAC semifinals, May 5, 2012.
It was the seventh time in nine games that Latimer, a two-time Junior College All-American at Genesee Community College, has scored at least five points in a game. Latimer, an attacker, leads the Storm in goals (27), assists (30) and points (57) and his 6.33 points per game currently leads all of Division III.
Latimer is now Keuka's single-season leader in assists, breaking Justin Pecori's mark of 27, set during the 2008 season. He is also just three points away from equaling Ryan Burton's mark of 60 points in a season, accomplished in 2007.
Sophomore Cory Gray (Seneca Castle, NY/Midlakes) added three goals while sophomore Anthony Luppino (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) had two goals and an assist for the Green and Gold, who have outscored the competition 144-44 during the winning streak.
Junior Kaisch Wheeler (Phoenix, NY/Baldwinsville) went 8-for-9 on faceoffs and had eight groundballs and caused two turnovers while classmate Zach Koczent (Geneva, NY/Geneva) won 11 of 19 faceoffs, added seven groundballs and scored his first collegiate goal as Keuka equaled its season-high for goals in a game.
Sophomores Jacob Bedosky (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott), Stephen Ruggles (Corning, NY/Corning) and Derek Pfeiffer (Lee Center, NY/Rome Free Academy) and freshman Brendan King (Auburn, NY/Auburn) each added goals for the Storm.
The Green and Gold led 2-1 five minutes in before Voigt started an 8-0 run with an even-strength goal with 9:25 remaining in the opening quarter. Crumlish scored three times and Gray added two goals during the run.
Keuka took an 11-3 lead into halftime, but outscored the Wildcats (4-10, 3-2) 4-1 in the third quarter and scored seven straight goals bridging the third and fourth quarters. Seven different student-athletes scored during the run for the Green and Gold.
Sophomore Eric Saltrelli (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder), the NEAC's reigning Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week, made seven saves and lowered his league-leading goals-against average to 6.67, 18th best in the country for Division III.
Keuka hits the road to play Wells College at 4 p.m. Wednesday before closing out the regular season at Cazenovia College at 3 p.m. on April 27.
